Use the numbers next to each row and column: they tell you how many squares in a row to fill, in order. Fill the right squares and the grid turns into a photo. A wrong square costs a heart. Mouse: left click fills a square, right click marks it as empty, click and drag paints a whole line, hovering highlights the row and column clues, Esc goes back. Touch: tap to fill a square, drag to paint a line; the black/white switch at the bottom chooses between filling squares and marking them empty.
